Read-A-Thon: Last Hour

Posted by Amanda on April 19, 2009

deweys-readathonbuttonOk – so I think this is going to be my last post and then I am going to snatch a few hours of sleep before dragging my sleepy butt to church. Anyway, there is the End of Event Survey to do:

1. Which hour was most daunting for you? How about the five hours that I slept earlier?
2. Could you list a few high-interest books that you think could keep a Reader engaged for next year? Ummm… mysteries and comedies are usually nice and easy to read.
3. Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next year? Not at the moment. You guys did great!
4. What do you think worked really well in this year’s Read-a-thon? The blog having all the information in one place was very convenient and it made it easy to see what was going on.
5. How many books did you read? I completed two books, started a third, and listened to a portion of a fourth.
6. What were the names of the books you read? The Hawk and the Jewel by Lori Wick, Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, Unnatural Death by Dorothy L. Sayers, and The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
7. Which book did you enjoy most? I really enjoyed everything I read but I will say that Wick’s fluffy romance was perfect for this morning and I did enjoy it immensely.
8. Which did you enjoy least? There wasn’t one that I didn’t enjoy. Good books, all!
9. If you were a Cheerleader, do you have any advice for next year’s Cheerleaders? I wasn’t a cheerleader, though I think those who were did an awesome job! Maybe next time, I will try to do that job.
10. How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again? What role would you be likely to take next time? I am definitely interested in participating in the next RAT and would like to do much more. Read (without disappearing for 5 hours and then sleeping for 5 more), cheer, and maybe donate a prize (especially since I was so lucky as to win one!)

With that, I think I am calling it a night and will let my sleep-deprived head recover a bit.

Thank you to everyone who organized this – you guys are amazing! And for those who read for hours and hours and read hundreds, if not thousands of pages – you guys amaze and inspire me. Night!

Well, the RAT is nearly over and I am rather close to falling asleep again. Not sure I will make it but I have actually read (and finished my second book) so I guess I am fairly satisfied.

Read-A-Thon: Hour 22

Posted by Amanda on April 19, 2009

So yeah – remember me saying that I was just going to exercise or take a quick nap… well the quick nap that was supposed to be 30 minutes (I even set an alarm) lasted just a bit longer. As in, I just woke up. But I am back and hopefully, I will be able to make it through to finish the rest. Anyway, as you may have figured, I haven’t really read anything since my last post, so I’ll get back to that one now…

Read-A-Thon: Hour 17

Posted by Amanda on April 19, 2009

I have to admit that the last hour has really hit me hard and I am at that stage where I have to shake my head on occasion just to feel awake for a few seconds. I think it might be time for some exercise or a very short nap. We shall see.

Read-A-Thon: Hour 16

Posted by Amanda on April 18, 2009

Well, I am finally back and I had a decent time but I am very happy to be back in my room with Fahrenheit 451, ready to dive back into the books. I did get a chance to listen to the first two CD’s of The Kite Runner and I may pick that up when my eyes need a break but for now, it’s back to the reading!

While I was gone, the mid-event survey was held so I am also just going to add my answers into the pool…
1. What are you reading right now? I am finally back and picking up Fahrenheit 451.

2. How many books have you read so far? Just one 😦 But we are going to fix that.

3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon? I think I am very much looking forward to Unnatural Death, my Dorothy L. Sayers mystery.

4. Did you have to make any special arrangements to free up your whole day? Not really, though maybe I should have so I could have spent the whole day here…

5. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those? Just the dinner meeting with some acquaintances.

6. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far? I think the fact that I am really hoping to stay up all night, when I didn’t even plan to earlier today.

7. Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next year? Maybe make the feeds work easier. It might just be me but the feeds don’t seem to be updating and so it is more difficult to see who has posted recently.

8. What would you do differently, as a Reader or a Cheerleader, if you were to do this again next year? Make sure there were no breaks. No other things I had to do. And maybe by then, I will be in my own place and won’t have to worry about being anti-social as far as other people go.

9. Are you getting tired yet? Not really, but let’s see around hour 20.

10. Do you have any tips for other Readers or Cheerleaders, something you think is working well for you that others may not have discovered? Probably nothing great – just to have fun and stretch on occasion.

Read-A-Thon: Hour 10

Posted by Amanda on April 18, 2009

Well, I do believe it is time for me to leave for a bit. I have a meeting planned with some friends and I have to get ready and then go out for dinner. The nice thing is that I have an audio book to listen to as I prepare and drive there so I won’t be completely out of it – just sort of.

Also, the mini-challenge at the moment is from The Curious Reader who is asking about the local libraries:

1. What is the name of your local library? What city is it located in?
The one here is called the Columbia Station Public Library, I think. It is in Columbia Station so I figure that is probably what it is called…
2. How often do you go to the library? If you’re a regular, do the staff know you?
Well, I used to go to the library more often before I moved, but I just moved here not to long ago and so I got my library card yesterday. Which means the staff has seen me only a few times. Half of those times were with my grandmother, who they do know by name.
3. Do you browse while you’re there or just pick up items you have placed on reserve?
I am one who browses and tries to find something I might like. When I’m in the book store, I usually have a list of potential books but the library – I just browse through until I find something.
4. What is your favorite thing about your local library?
Ummm… like I said, I am new there so I haven’t been there a lot. They seem to be very good at getting things through the library loan system (my grandmother uses it a lot) so we will go with that.
